The Elsewalker is an art project I began in February of 2020. Each painting tells a story, and each painting tells another story when viewed in context. Also, each painting can be followed to the next painting in the series if you follow the most interesting thing in the scene.

I have heard that space is humanity's final frontier. It's strange to think about. We will someday settle that frontier, if we do not kill ourselves first and if an unknowable interstellar intelligence does not destroy us to preserve its existence from what we could someday become. Is there a point in time where our survival is assured? Will we ever live at sufficient distance from one another to return to those halcyon days of survivability, before we had invented the means to kill all humans everywhere and put that means into a suitcase?

Span is the tenth painting I completed in the Elsewalker sequence. It didn't come from those ideas, but those are the things I think about when my mind drifts to the stars. Conceptually it came about in a very straightforward way: I needed to bridge from a hole in a brick wall to some cosmic scene where I could depict a multi-panel scene of epic struggle between heaven and hell before transitioning to Interregnum. Well, I didn't end up painting any of that, and now Interregnum links into a different place in the Sequence.

Of course, this painting's role as a weird, oddball breaknfrom Elsewalker's normal weirdness is unchanged.
