I have been watching Arcane (the League of Legends show) and boy, it's good. Nobody could be more surprised than me. I'm never going to get over the death of traditional animation, but the Riot Studios people have finally sold me on the value of the new thing, so I guess it can stick around. [1]
Vi is sort of the protagonist of Arcane. She's definitely the most protagonist coded character, with her tough girl big sister background and antihero's wardrobe. But it's an ensemble story, and Vi's role in that story only really seems to be creating drama by making bad decisions.[2][3]
Anyway, you should watch it. It's a good show and the writing is mostly very good. The voice-acting is phenomenal. But man, the visuals are something else. It's genuinely a treat for the eyes. Like, it's so beautiful you could almost hang any frame on your wall.
- Obviously, this is great news for 3D animators everywhere.
- In universe, everybody except Vi and Silco seems to understand that everything Jinx touches goes wrong. Both Vi and Silco's denial of this takes slightly different shapes, but both of them have a good claim they could have got what they wanted in the first season had they been more honest with themselves about their team makeup.
- The worst of the Piltover-Undercity conflict prior to the time-skip is the direct result of Vi's decision to burglarize Jayce's apartment. But maybe this still isn't a fair statement, since Silco's plan is in motion and we likely end up with a dead or imprisoned Vander and a Vi who can blame that loss on her own inaction. And, of course, the relationship between the two cities is a very uneasy truce. Vander isn't willing to rock the boat by trying to fix it, so it's probably a situation where whoever was young and hungry to make a name for themselves was going to start a revolution that year.
